No Internet at Schools

The Article asks the question "Could your kids go without internet service at school?"

We all know our school: we could not survive and accomplish what we do without the internet. If USD253 decides to save money by taking the internet out of schools, then, what would we do? Sure maybe we don't rely completely on the district, but we will. What happens if they do?

I brought up this topic thanks to an article that Mr.P was talking to me about for an idea to blog. Texas Lawmakers might take away the technology fund from schools to help balance the state budget. That fund, that ONE fund pays for all of the internet in ALL of the Texas Schools, imagine having a fund like that for Kansas. Taking away that fund would cause the internet not to exist at Texas schools anymore.

Would kids be able to work as efficiently on projects that required more information than books can supply?

We've all had to use the internet one time or another to do research in elementary school. It's nearly impossible to gather the information you need without it. What about pictures to make a presentation more interesting?

So the questions are: Would you have survived doing projects in elementary school without the internet? What would you think life would be like if you didn't use the internet at school? Last but not least, oo you think the internet is useful for creating products?

  1. This is a great post! I don't think people realize how much schools depend on internet. Attendance is taken online now. Teachers communicate throughout the day by email. Not just schools though. Great post!

  2. This is really interesting. I agree, I don't think they should get rid of the internet in public schools, after all many kids do their work online at school.

  3. We probably couldn't survive without internet. The only way we could survive is if a teacher had an aircard and they used the internet to find lessons while the students went without internet. We would have to do physical projects and paper lessons almost exclusively. It would be a much different school, but it might work.

  4. We could not survive without internet On Site but we could still survive. If we had to we could do work at home like the virtual program but it still would not be the same hands on learning experience. So I agree with Brady but I also believe if we had to we could survive.
As far as public school internet goes I have never been able to use internet. We used flat out text books and library but I believe it is important for all students to be ale to have more resources than what is provided. So if internet in public schools is being used then it should remain and be used more often.

  5. I think we could survive, but not as well as we do now. We do use the internet for almost everything, but the teachers could use their projector, and print lessons for us. What I don't understand is why people just think the other schools don't need it as much. Secretaries use it to mark attendants, right the important announcements, and other stuff. I think the internet being gone will be bad for all schools.

  6. Man, I loving all these comments. I'm agreeing with Felicia, We could survive, just not as well. She's dead on with her explanation of why we need it. Not just the students but the staff as well.

  7. I agree with Felicia, it would hurt everyone. In our school all the deadlines would have to be pushed back, in order for the students to have more research time as much would have to be done at home. We wouldn't be able to do as much of what we do in our school.

I think that it would also be a hassle with funding because schools would have to either update their textbooks more often, or risk letting the students have outdated information.

  8. Great post Caylie! I agree with Felicia, I think without the internet though that wouldn't make this school the same. THAT is why we are who we are! We show all the schools how to work with 21st century technology, like using the internet!

  9. EXACTLY ASHLEY! What would our project based learning be like without the tools we use today. We could still do stuff but think what we would do with PBL learning without internet. It would be hard.

  10. I agree with Felicia, it would hurt everyone. All the deadlines would have to be pushed back, in order for the students to have more research time and much would have to be done at home. We wouldn't be able to do as much of what we do in our school. We would end up doing more "hands on projects" and a lot less on the computer.

  11. I guess this post was thought of at the right time. It made us think outside the internet ;). We had to be creative and find some other way other learning. By the way great post Caylie. This school wouldn't be what it is without internet.

  12. The internet is helpful in creating projects but I do hope it never gets to the point were we can't work without internet. We might be able to work with out the internet for one day one week maybe but while I don't think that TPLC would close down without internet but school would be way different without it.

  13. This is a really great post! I do agree with Felicia's comment. Technology is definitely a large important part of our school, but I think we could manage. We wouldn't have access to most of the applications and websites that we currently do. I know that technology is not all of what we are, we still have that unique way of learning. Who says we can't do that without internet? It may be difficult at first because of what we're used to, but I think we could keep our main teaching style.

  14. I think this would be bad for all schools. Like you said every student has used the internet at one point or another for using research. Whether it be marine biology, or recent news. Taking away the internet would not benefit anyone.

  15. School without internet? Yes, it'd be incredibly hard for this school to maintain and continue without internet. I mean teachers need something to help them plan and digging through books is not necessarily the easy way out. And it's not just schools, there's also businesses, and everything else for that matter. Without internet, I'm sure this school would still be different but I definitely wouldn't be the same. And the line between Charter schools and regular schools would be pretty thin. What would the differences be anyways?

  16. What I gathered from this article, was because the Texas school systems' are near a breaking point financially, they are deciding to possibly take away the internet and computers from schools. But why decide to take technology away? Why not possibly cut pay, or teachers? Or any other less important fund? Kids are always going to need internet, because as we've seen textbooks do not update constantly, and are more expensive than internet. They need to buy expensive textbooks year after year which really adds up, and is a BIG money eater in the budget. So I would say keep the computers and internet, due to the fact that textbooks are not going to have some information you're going to want to learn, for a presentation, report, etc. Also computers are cheaper than buying textbooks year after year.

  17. This is really interesting. I agree, I don't think they should get rid of the internet in public schools, after all many kids do their work online at school. Without internet at school, kids could not communicate with their teachers. Kids also wouldn't be able to check their grades. In another aspect, kids and teens watch 3 times as more TV than searching the internet!

  18. As much as I hated doing success maker in elementary school, it actually helped me improve. I think that the internet has tremendous possibilities on making presentations. As new software comes out every day our knowledge and interest can increase!

  19. Schools could survive without the internets, but there would be a lot of things that you couldn't do such as connecting with schools in other parts of the US and world like we do. We had school before there was internet so if we really had to we could survive without the internet.

  20. I suppose schools COULD go without internet, it would just make things very difficult. Students could always look through text books to learn new information; However I do think the internet is useful in creating products. In elementary school I could have easily gone without the internet, while I used it every now and then it was not an asset. However in middle school the internet is something necessary. I can only imagine how much it is used in high schools as well.

  21. It would suck, but eventually everyone would get over the lack of internet. We'd just use books instead. Our freedom to information would be restricted but not taken away because we all still had books. It amazes me that people always seem to jump at cutting internet first chance they get. People don't seem to have the intelligence to figure out that most of our educational and federal infrastructure depends on the internet

  22. In elementary school I wouldn't mind it but with out internet right now I would have been doomed. Doing any thing at this school would be improbable to say the least. Doing projects like the ones we do here wouldn't be possible without internet.
